Where to get peer support

If you are considering offering counseling online, please understand: everyone in this field is (a) a pioneer, and (b) an entrepreneur. Everyone is feeling their way as they go, so no one can tell you how to do it. Youll essentially be on your own, figuring it out for yourself, along with everyone else. Your peers will be the best sources of help: other therapists who are offering online counseling.

  • Join the International Society for Mental Health Online

The International Society for Mental Health Online (ISMHO) was formed in 1997 to promote the understanding, use and development of online communication, information and technology for the international mental health community. ISMHO quickly became an unofficial professional organization for e-therapists. This is the best and most supportive place for you to network with other e-therapists, ask questions, discuss issues, and contribute to the advancement of the field.

ISMHO membership is only US$25.00 per year. You can join via the website at http://www.ismho.org

In addition to online discussions, ISMHO organizes occasional face-to-face gathering in conjunction with major conventions of other professional associations.

  • Clinical Case Study groups

ISMHO sponsors clinical case study groups (for members of ISMHO) devoted to the discussion of psychotherapy cases and professional clinical encounters that involve the Internet. See the web page above for more information.
